Make sure winter activities are safe
Winter is almost here. Student group activities are beginning in earnest. It is time to pause and consider whether these activities are organized in ways likely to support personal safety.
Here is a checklist of questions to ask regarding school, church and youth activities in order to help evaluate their quality in terms of promoting student safety.
• Are clear behavior expectations in place for the adult leaders in the form of codes of conduct and safe practices? Is it easy for parents to find out what these expectations are?
• Are clear and age-appropriate behavior standards in place for student participants?
• Are activities structured in such a way that there are at least two students per adult at all times?
• Are parents welcome to drop in unannounced to observe and participate in the activities?
• How is the staff selected? Are background checks and personnel evaluations in place? Is parent and student feedback encouraged?
• Do students enjoy the activity and seem comfortable participating in it?
Not all activities will be universally popular but youths should not be fearful or nervous about attending. Watch and listen for signs of tension and discomfort.
Also, talk with youths and adults about their ideas on how to solve problems as they occur, and keep supervisors informed about any situations that need their attention.
