The Catholic Anchor is the official newspaper and news Web site of the Archdiocese of
Anchorage, Alaska. Archbishop Roger Schwietz, OMI, is its publisher.
The Catholic Anchor publishes on the last Friday of each month, 12 times a year. It is
mailed to every Catholic home in the archdiocese and to other subscribers around the
state and beyond. Total circulation is around 11,500.
Retired Archbishop Francis Hurley established the Catholic Anchor in April 1999. Its
mission has always been to inform Catholics about the church and the modern world
and their roles in both. In its document on social communications, “Inter Mirifica,” the
Second Vatican Council describes a “right to information about affairs,” the proper
exercise of which “demands that the matter communicated always be true, and as
complete as charity and justice allow.” The Catholic Anchor strives to provide true,
complete and objective information, sharing the good news of the church without
ignoring its shortcomings.
The Catholic Anchor carries local, national and world news, opinions and editorials,
letters and paid advertising. The staff and several professional freelance reporters
accomplish local news coverage. National news services provide timely news from
around the world.
The Catholic Anchor Web site is updated throughout each week and provides additional
local and national news, beyond what is contained in the printed edition.
Additionally, the Catholic Anchor maintains a Facebook page, YouTube channel and
Twitter account to help spread its content on social media outlets.
